The president of Ukraine has announced that Kyiv is ready to push forward with a U.S.-backed peace framework aimed at ending the devastating war with Russia. He emphasized that although a roadmap is on the table, certain points remain disputed and those, he says, must be resolved directly with the U.S. president. This marks a significant shift: Ukraine is signalling active willingness to work toward a diplomatic solution rather than prolonging conflict.
Bringing the United States and European partners together, Kyiv now supports moving from broad concepts to concrete negotiations. While cautious about certain terms, Ukraine is signalling an openness to compromise in the hope of delivering peace to its people.
The framework being discussed originally a 28-point proposal had drawn sharp concern from Kyiv and European allies. Critics argued the draft tilted heavily in Russia’s favour, demanding territorial concessions, military limitations, and a bar on future alliances.
Ukraine has made clear it won’t sign away its core interests blindly. The most sensitive terms particularly around territorial integrity, military capacity, and security guarantees remain a red line. President Zelenskiy has said these must be handled not by envoys, but with personal engagement between him and the U.S. president, reflecting Kyiv’s desire for dignity and sovereignty in any agreement.
This cautious but forward-leaning stance implies Ukraine is ready to negotiate but only on its own terms, with full transparency and respect for its national dignity.
Zelenskiy called on European allies to take part in ongoing discussions, arguing that decisions about Ukraine’s security must include Ukraine — just as decisions about Europe’s security must include Europe.
In parallel to bilateral U.S.–Ukraine talks, Kyiv has proposed a “reassurance force”: a multinational security presence that would underpin any peace agreement and help guard against renewed Russian aggression. By urging Europe to step up, Ukraine is signalling that lasting peace will depend not only on diplomatic deals, but on real-world security arrangements.
This approach shows that Kyiv is not seeking a quick exit from conflict at any cost but a stable, defendable peace built on collective responsibility and solidarity.
On one hand, the readiness to advance the peace framework, engage in direct talks, and bring allies into the fold shows maturity, pragmatism, and hope. It’s a clear signal that Ukraine is prioritizing peace for its people war-weary citizens longing for normalcy after years of conflict.
