Sanwo-Olu commissions key projects this week as part of his strategic vision to transform Lagos into a model city of development, innovation, and inclusive growth. The governor officially flagged off a series of developmental projects and launched a large-scale housing scheme in Ibeju-Lekki, signaling a strong commitment to infrastructure and urban renewal in one of Lagos’ fastest-growing corridors.
The projects, which include road infrastructure, housing development, and community services, were commissioned during a public event attended by community leaders, real estate stakeholders, and political dignitaries.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, known for his proactive approach to Lagos’ urban expansion, addressed the public during the ceremony, stating that the Ibeju-Lekki axis remains a key driver of the state’s economic future. The area, widely regarded as the future commercial hub of Lagos due to its proximity to the Dangote Refinery, Lekki Free Trade Zone, and the new deep seaport, is receiving targeted infrastructure investment.
Sanwo-Olu commissions key projects designed to prepare Ibeju-Lekki for its rapidly growing population and strategic importance. These include:
One of the standout announcements was the launch of a housing scheme with 312 units in the Ibeju-Lekki axis. These homes are part of the LagosHOMS (Lagos State Home Ownership Mortgage Scheme), an initiative meant to reduce the housing deficit across Lagos.
Sanwo-Olu explained that affordability was at the core of the project. “We are building homes not for the wealthy elite, but for working-class Lagosians — teachers, police officers, health workers, artisans — people who make the city work,” he said.
With over 20,000 housing units already delivered across Lagos since 2019, the housing scheme in Ibeju-Lekki stands as yet another milestone under the THEMES agenda (Traffic Management & Transportation, Health & Environment, Education & Technology, Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy, Entertainment & Tourism, and Security & Governance).
Sanwo-Olu commissions key projects to create a better environment for both residents and investors. He reiterated that infrastructure is at the heart of the state’s development strategy.
Road upgrades across multiple communities will reduce travel time and enhance mobility. The governor emphasized that rural roads would no longer be neglected in favor of urban highways.
In addition, the newly commissioned fire service and water projects align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly on clean water access and public safety.
According to him, “We’re not just laying concrete; we’re building the future.”
Another part of Sanwo-Olu’s initiative includes vocational training centers and community hubs. These facilities aim to train over 5,000 youths in tech, craftsmanship, digital skills, and entrepreneurial ventures over the next 24 months.
This, he said, is in response to the rising unemployment and underemployment rates among young people in Lagos.
“Jobs are not created by talk, they are created by action — and this is one of those actions,” the governor said while commissioning the newly completed tech-vocational training center.
Community leaders in Ibeju-Lekki expressed appreciation for the government’s focus on their region, which had long been overshadowed despite its potential. Mr. Kolapo Durojaiye, a local traditional leader, stated, “This is the first time in a long while we are seeing real government presence. These projects will change lives.”
Housing experts also welcomed the move. According to Mrs. Yinka Aluko, a real estate developer in Lekki, “With the speed of development and the new infrastructure, Ibeju-Lekki is no longer the ‘future’ of Lagos — it is the present.”
Sanwo-Olu’s efforts are expected to boost investor confidence in the Ibeju-Lekki region. With world-class projects like the Dangote Refinery, Lekki Free Zone, and Lekki-Epe Expressway already generating buzz, this new wave of public infrastructure is likely to increase land values and attract both local and international capital.
Experts believe that the housing scheme alone will indirectly create over 2,000 jobs through construction, maintenance, and services.
Additionally, the improved road networks and clean water projects are expected to enhance the living conditions for over 100,000 people in the region.
As Sanwo-Olu commissions key projects and rolls out strategic programs in underserved communities, he emphasized his belief in inclusive governance. “Development should not be selective. It must be inclusive and intentional — and that’s what we are doing in Ibeju-Lekki,” he said.
He concluded his address by calling on community members to take ownership of the facilities and ensure their sustainability through community cooperation.
Sanwo-Olu commissions key projects and flags off a transformative housing scheme in Ibeju-Lekki, marking a significant moment in Lagos State’s urban planning journey. By investing in infrastructure, housing, youth empowerment, and public safety, his administration continues to reshape the landscape of Lagos with people-focused development.
This move not only underscores his administration’s dedication to progress but also cements Ibeju-Lekki as a vital area for Lagos’ future prosperity.
