Dubai, UAE – June 27, 2025
Dubai’s iconic Burj Khalifa Metro Station is about to witness a dramatic transformation that promises to redefine commuter experiences in the world’s most visited downtown. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled its plans for a brand-new version of the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Station, scheduled to be fully operational by late 2025. This upgraded station aims to serve the growing number of visitors and residents flocking to the city’s bustling heart.
Originally opened in 2010 to connect residents and tourists to the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, the station has seen massive growth in footfall. With Dubai’s tourism sector projected to break new records, the RTA decided to launch an extensive upgrade project to expand capacity, improve passenger flow, and incorporate state-of-the-art smart systems.
According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General of the RTA, the 2025 Burj Khalifa Station upgrade will include:
“Burj Khalifa Station is more than a metro stop; it is a gateway to Dubai’s most iconic attractions,” Al Tayer said. “Our new station design will set a global benchmark for urban transit while meeting Dubai’s sustainability and innovation goals.”
The 2025 station redesign is heavily focused on sustainability and accessibility. Solar panels will power significant parts of the station, while a smart cooling system will reduce electricity use and improve comfort in Dubai’s harsh summer climate.
For those with limited mobility, the upgraded station will provide more elevators, smoother ramps, and wider gates to ensure universal accessibility. In addition, the platform will have advanced passenger information systems, helping travelers plan their journey in real time and in several languages, including Arabic, English, Hindi, and Mandarin.
The new station is expected to handle over 35,000 passengers per hour during peak times, a significant leap from its current capacity of around 22,000 per hour.
One of the most exciting features of the new station will be its climate-controlled pedestrian bridge, directly linking the metro station to the Dubai Mall and other Downtown attractions. This bridge will not only protect passengers from extreme heat but also improve safety and reduce road congestion around the Burj Khalifa Boulevard area.
The RTA also confirmed that the station will connect seamlessly with future transportation projects, including the upcoming Hyperloop terminal and Dubai’s autonomous shuttle services. This multi-modal integration is central to Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan, which aims to make 55% of trips in the city by public transport.
The new station is expected to deliver a major boost for Dubai’s tourism sector. As the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall together draw over 50 million annual visitors, the upgraded metro station will encourage even more residents and tourists to use public transport, reducing carbon emissions from road traffic.
Dubai’s hospitality and retail industries are also likely to benefit from smoother visitor arrivals and improved accessibility. “It is a fantastic investment in Dubai’s future,” said Sarah Khan, a senior analyst at a local tourism consultancy. “When you make getting around easier, you make spending easier. Everyone wins.”
Residents and visitors have largely welcomed the announcement. Commuters who regularly use the current station have complained about overcrowding during peak hours, especially on weekends and public holidays.
“I love how convenient the metro is, but during events like New Year’s Eve, it becomes almost impossible to move,” said Abid Malik, a Dubai resident who commutes through the station daily. “If they make it bigger and smarter, that’s great news.”
Construction work will be phased to minimize disruption, with most heavy works scheduled at night or during off-peak hours. The RTA has pledged to keep at least two platforms open throughout the entire upgrade process to ensure continuity of service.
The redesign will follow Dubai’s trademark futuristic style, with architectural elements inspired by the Burj Khalifa itself. Passengers can expect artistic touches, modern LED lighting, and a welcoming environment that blends Dubai’s heritage with its forward-thinking vision.
Dubai has repeatedly shown the world how to merge world-class infrastructure with smart city concepts, and the new Burj Khalifa Station is another example. With Expo City still drawing millions of visitors, and mega-projects like the Museum of the Future, the Palm Jebel Ali expansion, and the upcoming Al Maktoum Airport upgrades, Dubai is ensuring its transportation backbone stays ahead of demand.
The new Burj Khalifa Station 2025 promises to set a global standard for what a 21st-century transit hub should look like — efficient, beautiful, connected, and sustainable.
If all goes according to plan, Dubai residents and visitors will step into the future of urban mobility before the year ends, making every journey smoother and every moment near the Burj Khalifa even more memorable.
